Beehive stones
Beehive stones in Bogács
The first significant, well visible mark was left by an unknown nation presumably in the early migration of nations, who carved 473 rock-recesses in 72 riolitttufa tower. These special rock shapes represent geological and archeological values are the Beehive stones.
Since more than 70% of the Hungarian stones can be found in this region, the place is known as „the land of Beehive stones”.
They are limestone rocks with special bee-hive like formations carved in them. A five niche beehive stone can be found at the border of Bogács in Hintó valley. There are several beehive stones in the surrounding villages, too.
There is no clear opinions about their function. According to an archivist of Eger, Gyula Bartos, urns of burnt bodies’ ashes were likely be placed here by a Celtic tribe in the late Iron Age.
The region has been inhabited for a long time, proved by 60-70 thousands years old caveman finds found near Cserépfalu in cave Subalyuk.
